The Ministry of Avoidance was established in 1947 in response to growing national concern regarding the increasing tendency of citizens to undertake unnecessary tasks without sufficient administrative consideration.
Since its establishment, the Ministry has worked tirelessly, though never in undue haste, to promote the careful postponement of activities that, whilst not impossible, are often unnecessary.

Throughout the years, the Ministry has remained constant in its primary belief: THAT WHICH CAN BE SAFELY DELAYED SHOULD BE SAFELY DELAYED.
The Ministry has survived various periods of national enthusiasm, technological advancement and fashionable productivity. It has outlasted each of these with dignity, patience and a well-documented reluctance to change.
The Ministry does not measure success in speed. It measures success in deferred effort. The Ministry does not discourage repair. The Ministry simply encourages its deferral until a more convenient, appropriate or administratively advantageous moment.
The Ministry of Avoidance exists to assist citizens in the responsible management of time, energy and resources by promoting the careful postponement o f non-urgent domestic repair activities.
